The Year 2000
Challenge
Software programmers have stored dates in a "mm/dd/yy" format
to conserve disk storage, computer memory, data entry, and programming time. This was done
without consideration of the issues that will be encountered for Year 2000. A two-digit
"yy" format displayed as "00" does not differentiate between the
twentieth and twenty-first centuries (1900 and 2000 respectively). The industry now faces
the challenge of adding the two century digits (19 and 20) in the date field for hardware
and software products.
